Young people, especially women, in rural areas face challenges due to lack of quality education, opportunities, and support, leading to poverty and unemployment. To address this, SCAN-India launched a vocational training center in Chittoor town that offers courses in computer applications, entrepreneurship skills, sewing and embroidery. Some of them are accredited by the National Insitute of Open Schooling (NIOS), so the participants will get a government certificate after passing an exam.
SCAN-India has trained over 1,000 rural youth over the past years, with most now employed in various companies. Our vision is for all children and youth to have quality education and job skills to reach their full potential and contribute to society.
Also we conduct a summer holiday program in May.
The lack of education among youth in poor rural India is a major problem that perpetuates poverty and limits opportunities for advancement. Without access to quality education, many young people are unable to develop the skills and knowledge needed to pursue higher education or secure better jobs. This lack of education also contributes to a cycle of intergenerational poverty, as parents are often unable to provide adequate support for their children's education.
Women Empowerment
Women in rural India have historically been the victims of inequalities and vulnerable to economic and social exploitations. Gender-based discrimination, lack of access to education and healthcare, and limited economic opportunities all contribute to the marginalization of women in rural communities. These inequalities perpetuate a cycle of poverty and limit women's ability to fully participate in their communities and the broader society.
OUR COURSES
Sewing and Embroidery
To support and empower women we offer a job-oriented tailoring and embroidery course. At first, the women practice with paper and other raw materials to get an idea on how to tailor. They also learn simple stitching techniques at the beginning of the course. Afterwards, the tailoring students expand their knowledge by creating small dresses for dolls. Hereby they learn all the different stitching methods, which form the basis for a comprehensive knowledge on the subject. Towards the end of the course, they upscale the sizes of the dresses for children and also for women. Our goal is to enhance the abilities of the students and to build up their self-confidence so that they have the opportunity to open their own shop one day. They may also get a job with a good salary. After completing the course successfully, they are enabled to become financially independent. Usually 15 to 25 women attend the tailoring course.
Computer Applications
Nowadays a basic knowledge in computer applications is essential to manage the challenges in everyday life and a broad field of jobs require a good understanding in computer systems and their various programs. However, many young people from rural areas never got in touch with a computer and are therefore not familiar with those systems. Our 3 and 6-months computer courses give them the opportunity to learn how to work with the keypad and the mouse. Furthermore, often used programs like MS Word or Excel are introduced. During our computer course the students improve their skills in typing and get a comprehensive overview about how a computer works.
Additionally there is a 3-months course in the accounting program TALLY. With a good knowledge in this commonly used program our young students can improve their chances of getting a well-paid job.
Spoken English
The English course aims to empower youth by providing them with essential language skills for personal and professional growth. Participants will enhance their verbal communication, pronunciation, vocabulary, and listening comprehension. In today’s globalized world, English proficiency has become a vital asset, enabling individuals to access better employment opportunities, engage in cross-cultural interactions, and participate actively in the global as well as regional economy. This course equips students with the confidence and competence needed to bridge linguistic barriers, unlocking doors to a brighter future.
